Practicing Sustainability: How Can School Contribute to This Cause?Practicing Sustainability: How Can School Contribute to This Cause?
The purpose of schools is to nurture students into becoming functional and responsible community members in the society. In order to prepare students for the future, it is the duty of schools to help understand the impact of every aspect in the community. This includes educating about sustainability and raising awareness on environmentally friendly initiatives and practices. With this in play, students can make more informed decisions when it comes to protecting and improving the world.
The question is, how can schools ensure that they’re heading in the right direction when it comes to teaching them about sustainability and environment education? Metanoia Eco shared some insights with regards to this matter. Below are some of them.
Start within the Premises
To better promote green initiatives, schools must start implementing environmentally friendly projects within the academy. The idea of sustainability must be reflected clearly on the school grounds. Having more greens and trees around is a great start. Additionally, encouraging segregation within the school premises can kick off the practice of proper waste management among kids and students.
Joining in Green Projects
Aside from transforming the school into a green hub, it’s important to show children the academy`s commitment in these initiatives by joining several activities related to green initiatives. Taking part in clean up projects, marathons for a cause, and other similar activities would help open up the eyes of the students on the importance of sustainability and earth conservation.
Engaging Students in Sustainability Audits
To fully immerse students in this whole sustainability project, conducting green audits carried out by themselves would make them more involved in the process. Checking if the class is strictly following the 3R principles or are constantly checking on the trees they’ve planted would make them be more aware of the effects of their actions. This is of course, aside from the usual environmental education they hear and see during classes.
These are just some of the steps schools can take to further contribute to the promotion of the green movement to the future community members of the society. Schools definitely hold a vital role in raising awareness to these causes and issues.
